LINC’s Annual Spring Awards Luncheon

2013 Church Hill Irish

“LINC was one of the many benefactors for this year’s Church Hill Irish Festival. Over 50 volunteers from VCU and Innsbrook assisted LINC with managing the children’s area and resulted in some profoundly happy children and parents. Volunteers and staff could be found selling tickets, helping children slide down the moon bounces, setting up the games, and face painting!
Saturday, March 23 was a beautiful day despite a little chill, and the sun came out enough to warm us all. Sunday, however, proved to be cold and LINC was shown the true dedication of its volunteers when so many braved the sleet and stayed by their posts until the very end! Thank you to all of our volunteers and supporters, this was a lot of fun!”

It’s In The Bag 2013

7th Annual Live and Silent Handbag Auction

The 2013 annual live and silent handbag auction, It’s in the Bag, was a huge success! With 200 attendees, over 30 volunteers, 200 bags and specialty items the event proved exciting and entertaining in the beautiful space provided by snagajob. Every item bid upon helped raise money for LINC and at the end of the night nearly $40,000 was raised.

CLINKS for LINC

Our second Clinks for LINC was a great success at McCormick’s Whiskey Grill!

We had about 50 people come and show their support in recognition of men’s health awareness month which has internationally become known as, “No Shave November.” This year, over one million men participated in No Shave November by growing out their facial hair to “change the face of cancer.” To commemorate this month and to spread awareness about LINC’s services for cancer patients, LINC held a No Shave event of its own at McCormick’s Whiskey Grill in the Fan. Owner, William McCormick, generously pledged 25% of the nights food proceeds to benefit LINC.

At the end of the night, we drew names for the three door prizes donated by Dot the Barber owner of Refuge for Men, a barber shop featuring traditional shaves and haircuts for men. One of our winners included a representative from RVA Beard League who had come out to support LINC.

LINC would like to thank William McCormick and his great staff along with all the folks that came out and supported us last night! You made Clinks for LINC a great event.

LINC has 10,164 reasons to give thanks!

Billy Baxter's LINC UP 26.2 FundraiserTo all of our donors, both new and old, thank you! You have shown LINC that this truly is a time of giving and we could not be more pleased with the $10,164 that has been raised to date. For every dollar given to LINC a cancer patient gets eight dollars’ worth of services, for free. Still feeling the giving spirit? There’s still time to donate to the LINC Up 26.2 campaign to help us reach the half-way point of $13,100. You can donate by clicking here and referencing the campaign, “LINC Up” by typing it into the other gift designation space. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping cancer patients receive much needed support services. Here’s a recent success story of how one of LINC’s volunteer attorneys helped a cancer patient get her life back on track:

LINC recently assisted, Linda*, who learned her cancer had returned two weeks before beginning a new job. LINC was able to connect Linda with an attorney specializing in employment issues who advised her on her rights and FMLA so that she could move forward with her treatment and still begin her new job when she was able. Again, thank you for your generous gifts!

CLINKS for LINC- November 2012:

What better way to raise awareness about LINC’s services than to reach out into the community and partner with local restaurant owners? LINC launched its first in a series of monthly events: CLINK for LINC.
Every month, LINC will be hosted by a different Richmond restaurant for a few hours of “clinking” for LINC!
In November, we were pleased and grateful that  Mc Cormack’s Irish Whiskey Grill in Richmond hosted this event..
Event info: Mc Cormack’s on November 27, 6:00-9:00 PM.

Kay Unger’s Fashion Show to Benefit LINC

Once again, Saks Fifth Avenue hosted a fashion show and donating 10% of its sales for October 10 and 11.  This year the show featured the latest seasonal designs from Kay Unger.  Ms. Unger is not only a cancer survivor but an acclaimed entrepreneur and philanthropist and the creative head of the Phoebe Company, LLC. Her designs offer colorful, creative alternatives to the “little black dress” often inspired by Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn.

The fashion show not only featured modeling of Ms. Unger’s designs but included a representative from Ms. Unger’s New York office, and complimentary drinks and light fare.

LINC’s “Amazing Raise” Party

One of Richmond’s premiere local restaurants, Selba, hosted LINC for several hours during the 36 hour fundraiser “The Amazing Raise!”

The evening began in Selba’s beautiful Garden Room where complimentary light appetizers were served. LINC staff and supporters were present along with laptop stations for unique $50 donations to help reach a goal of one of three prizes: $10,000; $15,000; or $20,000! The Amazing Raise was a great success, prizes were awarded to the nonprofit organizations with the most unique donations of $50 or more and while LINC did not win the top three prizes we did manage to raise over $3,000!

At about 6:30 pm our party moved to the bar area and continued to mingle. This event was open to the public, anyone and everyone was welcome and more than 20 people stopped by to support LINC and to check out Selba for the first time. We enjoyed spring rolls, fried brussels sprouts, sausage flat bread, and a Mediterranean spread of hummus, olive tapenade, and tzatziki. LINC would like to thank Selba for being such a wonderful host.

Be sure to stop by Selba sometime for dinner, it is a Richmond original and is, “dedicated to serving you healthy, local food while providing you with an atmosphere that promotes comfort and contentment.” To find out more about this restaurant please visit: http://selbarichmond.com/.
By supporting LINC and patronizing Selba you are supporting your community, you are supporting local!

Lovern and Friends Golf Tournament Donates $10,000 to LINC

Thank you to the Lovern and Friends organization for allowing LINC to be the beneficiary of its 2012 golf tournament.  The Lovern and Friends Golf Tournament, held at the Federal Club in Glen Allen on June 21st, raised close to $10,000 for LINC!  The tournament kicked off with a shotgun start around noon as teams of four took to the course to benefit LINC.  As an added perk for those who played, many holes around the course were sponsored by companies which awarded participants with free gifts such as flat screen TV’s, vacations and golf clubs for a hole-in-one.  Players were also able to showcase their skills with longest drive and closest-to-the-pin competitions.  The day was capped off with a dinner and an awards ceremony acknowledging outstanding community members as well as those teams and individual golfers who performed well at the tournament.

Initially, Lovern and Friends started as an informal day of golf among friends to honor Michael Lovern before undergoing his second surgery to remove a tumor from his spinal cord.  Mike was first diagnosed with this tumor in 2002, and endured over a year of grueling rehabilitation. Five years later, bad news was brought to the Lovern family once again, and Mike knew what was in store.  The surgery was performed at MCV in October.   Mike was swinging a golf club as soon as 3 months later which was an incredible recovery, thanks in part to a supportive group of friends, his family, and an expert team of doctors from the MCV and the VCU Massey Cancer Center.

To commemorate his second successful recovery (as well as the recovery of other friends and family members), the event has evolved into an annual golf tournament.  Lovern and Friends’ goal is to contribute to the ongoing research and care of all those affected by cancer.  The organization anticipates growing the foundation annually, and it has risen over $40,000 in the first 3 years.  The additional $10,000 will help LINC fulfill its mission of helping cancer survivors and their families with legal and financial challenges.

Innsbiz Network Bowling

Thanks to Lovern and Friends for putting together the Innsbiz Network Bowling event to benefit LINC.  The event was great fun and raised several hundred dollars toward our efforts to assist cancer patients with their non-medical needs.  Special thanks as well to the Innsbrook Foundation for their hard work and efforts.
